How does Scrap Metal Recycling Work?

Metal RecyclingWe talk all the time about scrapping, scrap metal prices, how to earn the most money for your scrap, etc… but we don’t talk as often about the actual scrap metal recycling part of our business!

Smith Iron and Metal is all about weighing and paying our customer’s scrap metal… quickly! Customers want to get in, get weighed, unload, and get paid! Our focus on making this experience as quick, easy and lucrative for our customers is what’s kept us at the top of the scrap metal game here in Richmond for decades.

So… why are we talking about metal recycling then?

Truth is, most people don’t really know what happens to their scrap metal after they unload it at our recycling center. So we’re here to answer the question: how does scrap metal recycling work?

It’s kind of like donating stuff Goodwill! You drop off your clothes or used household items, then don’t really think about what happens next. While Goodwill has their “turning jeans into jobs” program, we’re more into packaging and recycling your scrap for future use.

First, we sort your scrap metal, and process recyclable items through our shredder. Then, we take all the trash straight to the dump. It’s amazing how much trash we get every day!

Next, we market the recycled metal to various industrial mills.

Finally, we sell the various recycled metal to the mills, who melt it down to make new products. That’s it!

Just like our motto, we like breaking things down so they are easy to understand and easy to process!

I never really realized what happened to scrap metal once you sold it. It is pretty cool that it is used to make new products, that is really helpful for the environment. I have a lot of scrap metal sitting in my backyard that my wife is begging me to get rid of. I will have to have it recycled!

I think it was really interesting that you have an efficient way to sort the trash from the metal itself. By recycling scrap metal, I didn’t think that there would be a lot of trash that comes along with the job. I will make sure to sort mine well next time I take a load to the scrap metal yard!
